8/31/17 – Anti-Semitism

As colleges begin the new academic year they must contend with the new face of anti-Semitism.

Here’s what’s happening behind the headlines.

It’s the same old anti-Semitism.  It just masquerades as the BDS movement: Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.  BDS masks its anti-Semitism not by attacking Jews directly but instead by attacking the spiritual center of Judaism: Israel.

Criticism of Israel is protected speech.  Even anti-Semitic speech is protected.  But let’s call it what it is: anti-Semitic.

BDS claims to seek peace in the Middle East. But its toxic message singles-out the only democracy in the region.  It uses decades-old anti-Semitism tactics: delegitimizing, demonizing and using double-standards.

The movement’s call for the destruction of Israel is to delegitimize the Jewish state.

BDS equates Zionism with Apartheid and racism to demonize Israel. The greatest inversion of all-time is to equate Zionism with Nazism.

And the only atrocities it claims to see are in Israel. The double-standard.

The BDS movement probably views college campuses as an opportunity to grow and further its goals.  Its active at some of the most elite, progressive schools [here, here, here].

Its call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions is the extension of the decades-old practice of isolating Jewish businesses.  It’s the same-old anti-Semitism on a grander scale.
