4/14/16 Justice

In 2014, President Obama moved to normalize U.S. relations with Cuba.  Last year, diplomatic relations were restored.  It ended 50 years of cold war.

Last month, Obama traveled to Cuba.  He met with President Raúl Castro, took in a baseball game and posed for photos in front of a building-sized mural of Che Guevara.

Restoring ties with Cuba rewards bad behavior.  Cuban officials arrested hundreds of political dissidents preceding Obama’s visit.  Cuba’s leaders are not nice people.  They slaughter their own citizens when they try to flee the Socialist nation.

Now, President Obama should insist Cuba extradite to the US the 70 some-odd fugitives who have been given refuge there.

Topping the list is Joanne Chesimard.  She goes by the alias Assata Shakur.  She was a member of the Black Liberation Army — an offshoot of the Black Panthers.  The BLA was one of the most violent domestic terrorist groups in the 1970s.

Chesimard was sentenced to prison for killing a New Jersey state trooper. And the wounding another.  She was suspected in the ambush deaths of four other police officers: two white and two black.

Chesimard busted out of a New Jersey prison in 1979.  She fled to Cuba where she was given asylum.

President Obama should demand Cuba turn-over Chesimard so she can finish her prison sentence.
