2/9/16 – War on Women

Some embrace the huge influx of immigrants to the U.S. as increasing multicultural diversity.  It makes us a better nation, they argue.

But some immigrant practices are contrary to our long-held values.  And they should never be permitted.

Case in point: female genital mutilation.

It’s just what it sounds like. It’s practiced in many African and Middle Eastern countries for cultural and religious reasons.  Globally, 3 million young girls have the procedure forced on them each year.

In America, we view the practice as a violation of basic human rights.  So we outlawed it in 1996.  Immigrants have skirted the law by taking their daughters to their home countries for the procedure.  It’s called “vacation cutting.”  So in 2013, Congress passed new legislation that made it illegal to take a minor abroad for this purpose.

The Centers for Disease Control released estimates of how many women and girls in the U.S. have undergone or will likely undergo the procedure.  The number is staggering.  More than half a million.  More than one-third are younger than 18.  This is double the estimates of just a decade ago.

The dramatic increase is attributed to the rapid rise of refugees and asylum seekers from countries that practice female genital mutilation.

We don’t want this multicultural diversity.
