12/22/16 Sanctuary Cities

Who’s responsible for the nation’s immigration laws?

Here’s what’s happening behind the headlines.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona became something of a lightning rod.  He was enforcing federal immigration laws.  That may have contributed to his reelection defeat last month.

But immigration law is not the responsibility of the county sheriff.  Any more than state or local police are responsible for enforcing federal tax law, patent law or any other federal statute.  Federal, state and local cops have their own swim lanes.  FBI agents don’t write parking tickets.

On the other hand, state and local government officials should not be working against federal law.  This is what’s happening with mayors who declare they govern sanctuary cities.  They claim those who are here illegally are protected from apprehension.

These mayors are accomplices to criminal activity.  This is no different than if they harbored tax cheats, armed robbers or kidnappers.  Breaking the law is breaking the law.

Most, if not all mayors have sworn an oath to uphold the law.  Not uphold the laws they agree with.  All laws.

Sanctuary city mayors have broken their oaths with their lawless actions.
