08/25/11 The End of Free TV?
There comes a time when I have to address an issue that directly impacts my industry. And you.
You’ve heard the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Washington has a new rule. “We’ll fix it until we break it.” This is so true of the Federal Communications Commission. The agency that regulates broadcast TV including this station.
The FCC hatched this scheme that it should take away electromagnetic spectrum from TV stations. This is how local stations broadcast free TV to viewers who don’t want to pay the cable, satellite or phone companies.
The FCC wants to make this spectrum available to cell phone companies.
Americans are canceling pay TV services from cable, satellite and phone companies in record numbers. This is because local TV offers the most popular shows, local news, sports, and weather. And high definition programming. For free.
When did your cell phone company ever give you something for nothing? That would be: never.
Later this year, new devices are being introduced that can receive mobile TV. And it will be airtime free. Cell phone companies would rather charge you for it. This is why they want broadcast TV spectrum.
If you believe, as I do, that there is value in keeping free, local TV on the air then contact Congress. Don’t let them confiscate local TV spectrum.
