9/5/17 – The Worst
Oftentimes disasters such as Hurricane Harvey bring out the best in people. Sadly, it also showcases the worst.
Here’s what’s happening behind the headlines.
Peter King is a Republican New York Congressman. As the tragedy of Harvey was unfolding, King posted social media comments attacking Senator Ted Cruz from Texas. Cruz refused to support New York following the 2012 storm, Sandy, King claimed. But he, Peter King, would still vote for disaster relief for Texas.
Except what King was saying just was not true.
Congress quickly passed a $9.7 billion Superstorm Sandy relief bill. It passed unanimously in the Senate.
It was a second bill for $50.7 billion that was the problem. About half the money was for actual storm relief. Tens of billions dollars in spending was unrelated to Sandy. This second bill included money for 47 of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Only Arizona, Michigan and South Carolina didn’t get a hand-out. That second bill passed the Senate 62-36. Cruz was among a third of the Senate that had a problem with all the pork in the bill.
