6/6/17 – IRS Secret Court
Four years ago, it was learned the IRS had been used as a weapon against perceived political enemies of the Obama Administration [here, here, here, here, here, here, here].
Here’s what’s happening behind the headlines.
The FBI and Justice Department quickly closed investigations claiming they didn’t find wrongdoing. However, somebody at the IRS illegally leaked confidential taxpayer information and targeted non-profits.
Nearly all progress on uncovering possible criminal activity has been made in civil court where hundreds of organizations joined a class action lawsuit. In fact, this is the only real progress. The IRS admitted to the court that 426 organizations were targeted by IRS officials.
Lois Lerner and Holly Paz are the focus of legal proceedings. They ran the IRS office at the heart of the targeting campaign. They both claim they did no wrong and didn’t break the law.
But get this.
A federal judge granted their request to hold the proceedings in secret court. The pair argue the public would be enraged if they knew the details of what took place. And their lives would be at risk.
So, if what they did was legal and proper then why would the public be enraged? This makes no sense.
