1/31/17 – Real ID

If you live in Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine then you better get used to riding Greyhound bus.

Here’s what’s happening behind the headlines.

Next year, the TSA will no longer accept driver’s licenses from those 2 states as valid ID. Or 28 from other states and U.S. territories. This means you don’t get to fly.

It all goes back to a 2005 federal law. There was concern terrorists could be using counterfeit licenses. Although no evidence was offered this was actually happening. The nineteen 9/11 hijackers had 30 legitimate licenses and IDs they obtained because of weak immigration laws.

The TSA recommends people with unaccepted licenses get passports.

This isn’t an anti-terrorism measure. The TSA acknowledges in internal documents that x-ray machines and metal detectors make it virtually impossible for a person to commandeer a jetliner.

There’s no Constitutional Amendment that guarantees a right to fly. But freedom of movement is a right under the Constitution’s privileges and immunities clause.

There are some who claim that getting a free, state-issued, photo ID poses an undue burden on those who want to vote. But dropping $135 on a passport to travel around the country is no big deal.

None of this makes any sense.
